11 Montessori Activities for Toddlers for Bedtime Wind-Down
Bedtime is in thirty minutes and they're running laps around the couch. The energy that should be dissipating is somehow amplifying. Every attempt to slow them down produces the opposite effect because telling a toddler to calm down is like telling water to flow uphill. The calming has to happen through their body, not through your words.
The Montessori approach to transitions (including the transition to sleep) is through the prepared environment: set up the conditions that make calm happen naturally. The activities in the thirty minutes before bed should provide decreasing sensory intensity that guides the nervous system from "awake" to "ready for sleep."
1. Warm Water Play (Short Session)

Five to ten minutes of warm water. Sink, bin, or bath. The warmth activates the parasympathetic system. The water provides gentle sensory input. The pouring and squeezing provide just enough hand occupation to prevent the restless energy from converting to running.

3. Playdough (Slow Squeezing)

Not pounding. Not throwing. Slow, sustained squeezing. Rolling slowly. Pressing gently. The slow pace is the point. The resistance of the playdough provides proprioceptive input through the hands at a low intensity that matches the wind-down energy level.

Simple Montessori transfer tray (spooning pom poms between containers) done in dim light. Lowering the light reduces visual stimulation, which signals the brain to produce melatonin. The transfer work provides the hand occupation that prevents restless energy from building.
Why it works: Dim light is the environmental melatonin trigger. Combining it with quiet hand work creates the ideal pre-sleep condition: low visual stimulation (dim light), occupied hands (transfer work), and steady proprioceptive input (spooning). 6. Sorting by Touch (Eyes Closed or in Dim Light)
