15 Activities for Kids Ages 5-8 Using Stuff You Already Have
Your kid is bored and they're making sure you know it. They've circled the house twice, rejected three suggestions, and are now hovering behind you making noises that suggest a meltdown is on deck. You don't have the budget, the energy, or the motivation to go buy something new. You need an idea that works with whatever's already lying around.
The good news is that 5 to 8 year olds don't need much. They need a challenge, a material, and enough independence to feel like they're running the show. Everything else is just decoration.
All of these use stuff from your house.
No kits, no special supplies, no trips anywhere. Tape, paper, boxes, kitchen stuff, socks. If you've got a junk drawer and a recycling bin, you've got a full activity lineup.
1. Duct Tape Wallet

Give them duct tape (or any strong tape) and show them how to fold strips into a flat rectangle. They layer strips sticky-side-together to make sheets, then fold those into a wallet shape. They can add pockets, a card slot, whatever they can figure out. This is the kind of craft activities for kids that feels like building something real.
Why it works: The end product is functional, which matters to this age group. They can actually use the wallet, which gives the whole process more purpose than a typical craft.
2. Marble Maze in a Box
Give them a shallow cardboard box (a shoe box lid works great), some tape or hot glue (with supervision), and strips of cardboard cut from another box. They build walls and channels inside the lid to create a maze, then tilt the lid to guide a marble through. Building it is one activity. Playing it is another.
Why it works: The engineering challenge is real. They have to think about angles, dead ends, and flow. Then testing it and adjusting is a whole second phase that doubles the engagement time.

3. Newspaper Fort
Roll newspaper pages into tight tubes and tape the ends. Those tubes become building material. They connect them with tape to make structures: forts, towers, bridges, tunnels. The tubes are surprisingly strong and the building process is slow enough to last a long time.
Why it works: The unusual building material forces creative problem-solving. They can't just stack them like blocks. They have to figure out how to connect and stabilize, which is an engineering challenge that keeps their brain fully occupied.
4. Homemade Board Game
Give them cardboard, markers, and a die (or make one from a small box with numbers written on the sides). They design the board, write the rules, create the spaces, add challenges and shortcuts. Then they play it with you or a sibling. The design phase alone can take an hour.
Why it works: Game design requires planning, creativity, and logical thinking all at once. And the payoff of actually playing something they made gives it a significance that store-bought games can't match.
5. Tape Escape Room

Use painter's tape to create an "escape room" in one room. Tape the door shut (symbolically), hide clues around the room, and let them solve their way out. The clues can be simple: "Look under something soft" (pillow), "Find the coldest spot" (fridge), "Check behind the tallest thing in the room" (bookshelf). Five to eight clues is plenty.
Why it works: The mystery and urgency create engagement that outlasts most standard activities. They're moving, reading, thinking, and solving all at the same time.
6. Kitchen Science Experiments
Baking soda and vinegar volcano (cup, baking soda, dish soap, food coloring, pour vinegar). Milk color explosion (plate of milk, drops of food coloring, touch dish soap to the surface). Dissolving test (which things dissolve in water: salt, sugar, rice, sand). Each one takes five minutes to set up and feels like real science.
Why it works: The dramatic reactions make it feel exciting, and the "will it work?" element keeps them trying variations long after the first experiment.
7. Stop Motion Video
Give them a phone or tablet (camera only), a bunch of small toys or figures, and a stable surface. They position the toys, take a photo, move them slightly, take another photo. Repeat fifty times. Play it back. It's a movie. This can go on for hours because the movie is never long enough or good enough to stop.
Why it works: The creative control is total. They're directing, setting, animating, and reviewing. Every part of the process is engaging, and the result is something they can show people.
8. Cardboard Armor
Give them cardboard, tape, scissors (age-appropriate), and markers. They design and build wearable armor: a shield, a sword, a helmet, a breastplate. The building is the first phase. The role-playing in full armor is the second. Both phases are long.
Why it works: Wearable creations are more engaging than decorative ones because they get used immediately. The armor isn't something that sits on a shelf. It's something they walk around the house in for the rest of the day.
9. Tin Foil Sculptures
Hand them a roll of tin foil. They tear off sheets and mold them into whatever they want: animals, robots, swords, crowns, abstract shapes. The foil holds its shape, which means they can build on previous pieces and create something that stands up on its own.
Why it works: Foil is a building material they probably haven't used before, which makes it novel. The moldability means there's no skill barrier, but the structural challenge of making things stand keeps it interesting.
10. Rope Course (Indoor)

Use string, yarn, or ribbon to create a "laser" maze in a hallway. Tie it between walls, furniture legs, and doorknobs at various heights. They have to get through without touching the string. This is a spy movie in your hallway, and they will take it extremely seriously.
Why it works: The physical challenge of climbing over and under requires full-body engagement, and the spy narrative makes them feel like they're on a mission instead of doing an activity.
11. Recipe Invention
Give them access to the pantry (within reason) and tell them to invent a snack recipe. They pick ingredients, measure, combine, and taste-test. They write down the recipe when they get one they like. Set some ground rules (nothing that requires the stove, max five ingredients) and let them experiment.
Why it works: Real-world experimentation with a tangible (edible) result. The trial and error of combining flavors keeps them iterating, and eating the result makes it feel like a real accomplishment.
12. Shadow Puppet Theater
Turn off the lights in one room. Use a flashlight or lamp against a blank wall. They make shadow shapes with their hands, or cut out shapes from cardboard and tape them to sticks. They perform a show. The darkness adds drama and the shadows add novelty. If they make characters from cardboard, the creation phase is a whole first activity before the show even starts.
Why it works: The environment change (dark room, flashlight) makes it feel special and different from daytime activities. The performance element adds a second layer of engagement.
13. Blanket Drag Race

Each kid sits on a blanket on a hard floor. Someone else pulls them. Race against a sibling, a parent, or the clock. If it's just one kid, they time themselves pulling a stuffed animal passenger across the room. The upper body effort of pulling is surprisingly intense, and the laughter from the passenger makes everyone want another turn.
Why it works: The physical effort is real, the racing element is motivating, and the silliness of sliding around on a blanket keeps the mood light.
14. Magazine Challenge
Give them a magazine or catalog and a challenge: find something from every color of the rainbow, find five animals, find the most expensive thing, find something you'd buy for a friend. They flip, search, cut out (or point to), and collect. Add a timer to make it competitive, or let them make a collage from their finds. The hunt format keeps them engaged.
Why it works: The search-and-find structure works at every age. The magazine provides endless material, and the challenges give it direction without being restrictive.
15. Cup Phone
Two cups and a long piece of string. Poke a hole in the bottom of each cup, thread the string through, tie a knot inside each cup. Pull the string tight. Talk into one cup, listen from the other. It actually works (when the string is taut), and the novelty of it is enough to keep them experimenting for a while.
Why it works: The science is real and testable. They can experiment with string length, tightness, cup material, and whispering volume. Each variable is a new test.
The Bottom Line
Your house is full of activities. You just have to look at the stuff differently. Cardboard isn't recycling, it's building material. Foil isn't for leftovers, it's for sculptures. String isn't for tying things, it's for phone lines and laser mazes.
The best activities for this age group are the ones where they build something, test something, or create something with a real outcome. Give them materials and a challenge, and they'll do the rest.
